On November 3, 2024, a woman\u2019s killing in a neighborhood in Bandar Abbas was
reported to the Hormozgan Province police. Detectives arriving at the scene found signs
of conflict between the victim and her husband, leading to the hypothesis that the
husband was the likely perpetrator. Based on this suspicion, he was detained. Initially,
he denied involvement, but under further questioning, his contradictory statements led
him to eventually confess to stabbing his wife due to \u201csevere family conflicts.\u201d
The suspect admitted that after killing his wife, he transported her body by car to a
village in Qaleh Ganj, Kerman, and buried her near a dirt road outside the village.
However, Hormozgan police have withheld the identities of both the victim and the
perpetrator from the media.
The term \u201cfamily conflict\u201d often used by government-affiliated media, is fundamentally
misleading when describing honor killings. This phrase subtly implies that the victim
may bear some responsibility and perpetuates the notion that honor killings are private
family matters rather than serious social and human rights issues. Such wording can
lessen the sensitivity of society and legal authorities to the broader social and legal
aspects of these crimes.
The term \u201chonor killing\u201d more accurately conveys the nature of these crimes, fostering a
broader and more serious legal, social, and cultural response. Adopting precise
terminology is essential for addressing these acts of violence and discrimination and for
advocating more effectively for victims.
In many cases, men\u2014often husbands\u2014driven by patriarchal beliefs refuse to recognize
women\u2019s independence, viewing them as their property. Consequently, any behavior
perceived as defiance or disobedience becomes intolerable, leading to acts of brutality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
