On Wednesday, January 1, 2025, Kosar Darabi, an 18-year-old resident of
Kermanshah, was shot to death by her husband. According to reports received by the
Stop Honor Killings Campaign, Kosar had been forced into marriage with this individual
two months prior.
From the very beginning of the marriage, Kosar endured physical and psychological
abuse. Before being killed, she was severely beaten by her husband, who then took her
outside the city and killed her with a firearm. The perpetrator has since been arrested.
Forced marriages and honor killings are interconnected phenomena rooted in
patriarchal structures and the culture of control over women and girls. In forced
marriages, individuals\u2014especially women\u2014are forced into marriage without their
consent or against their will, often due to family or societal pressure to preserve \u201chonor\u201d
or uphold power dynamics.
When women resist such marriages or imposed roles, or if it is perceived that their
behavior threatens the family\u2019s \u201chonor,\u201d they may become victims of severe violence,
including honor killings.
This cycle of violence bluntly illustrates the violation of human rights and the absence of
individual freedoms in societies where such practices occur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
