On Sunday, February 2, 2025, a devastating act of domestic violence unfolded in the
city of Bonab, East Azerbaijan Province. A 51-year-old man named Abolfazl Ein-Ali
Momaqani brutally killed his wife, Shiva Nabavi (44), their 15-year-old daughter Kimia,
and 11-year-old son Amirali, before ending his own life by throwing himself under the
wheels of a semi-truck.
According to a source close to the family who spoke with HRANA, the attack occurred
early in the morning. While Shiva and Kimia were still asleep, Abolfazl used an iron pipe
to kill them. Amirali, who was preparing to go to school and witnessed the aftermath,
fled to the basement. There, his father struck him in the head with a wooden object,
fatally injuring him.
This horrific event is not only a stark example of extreme domestic violence, but it also
brings to light cultural and societal issues deeply rooted in certain regions, particularly
East Azerbaijan. Local civil society activists argue that rooted patriarchal attitudes and
controlling views about women\u2019s roles in families and society contribute to a higher
prevalence of gender-based violence. Harmful teachings propagated through some
cultural institutions can escalate familial disputes into lethal outcomes.
This tragedy is a glaring warning to authorities and relevant institutions. It highlights the
urgent need for reform in educational and cultural systems to promote gender equality
and mutual respect. Moreover, robust legal and psychological support systems for
women and children are vital in preventing such devastating events.
Ultimately, the Bonab killings serve as another reminder that unless society confronts
and transforms its deeply held patriarchal and authoritarian attitudes toward women, the
