On Thursday, February 29, 2025, a woman named Sakineh or Anbar, 47 years old, was
killed by her husband, Valiollah Mohammadi, in Pardis, a city in Alborz Province.
According to Bahar News Agency, the man killed his wife using multiple blows from a
meat tenderizer. He was also found injured in the chest and was taken to the hospital.
After receiving treatment and being discharged, he confessed to the killing.
In government-affiliated or state-friendly media, the motive behind the killing was
described as a \u201cfamily dispute.\u201d The killing of Sakineh (Anbar) is yet another example of
systemic violence against women in Iran, often concealed behind vague terms like
\u201cdomestic disagreement.\u201d This case reflects not only the deep-rooted gender
inequalities in Iranian society but also the way in which state media ignore and
normalize violence against women.
The use of a meat tenderizer and the number of blows involved point to the brutal and
savage nature of this crime. In such cases, the use of kitchen tools or everyday
household items in the killing of women is rarely a result of a momentary outburst; it is
deeply rooted in patriarchal views that treat women\u2019s bodies as male property. Although
state-aligned media describe the motive as a \u201cfamily dispute,\u201d this framing is common in
similar cases\u2014where structural violence against women is obscured by ambiguous
terminology, preventing the true nature of the crime from being addressed.
In reality, these are not simply \u201cfamily disputes,\u201d but part of a broader phenomenon of
honor-based violence in which women become victims of a patriarchal system.
Describing such crimes as \u201cdomestic disputes\u201d carries two dangerous consequences: it
desensitizes the public to violence against women and reduces the accountability of the
legal and law enforcement systems.
When a woman\u2019s killing is framed as a private issue, society fails to recognize it as a
social crisis. Moreover, labeling such killings as \u201cpersonal disagreements\u201d allows
governments to avoid responsibility and to neglect the urgent need for legal reforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
