On Sunday, April 13, 2025, in the city of Khomam, Gilan Province, the body of a 49-
year-old woman was found in her home, bearing signs of injuries to her head and face.
According to state-run media, the killing had occurred three days before the body was
discovered. The suspect, identified as the victim\u2019s son, M.S., killed his mother using a
hard object. Less than three hours after the body was found, police identified and
arrested the perpetrator, who confessed to the killing during the initial interrogations.
According to Rokna, quoting the police chief of Khomam County, the suspect, who is
addicted to drugs, cited a financial dispute and verbal argument with his mother as the
motive.
The killing of this 49-year-old woman by her son once again confronts us with the grim
realities of domestic violence, the vulnerability of women in their own homes, and the
devastating impact of addiction. What makes this case even more harrowing is the
three-day delay between the killing and the discovery of the body, an indication of the
isolation and social neglect that women may face within their families and communities.
While the perpetrator pointed to a \u201cfinancial dispute\u201d as his motive, this explanation
must not distract us from examining the deeper, systemic roots of such violence.
Violence against women, even by their children, is often rooted in a web of
gender inequality, poverty, lack of psychological and social support, and the absence of
life skills education.
Tragically, domestic violence is often reduced to mere \u201cpersonal disputes\u201d or \u201cfamily
quarrels,\u201d yet these incidents reflect a broader social crisis that demands urgent
intervention and serious policymaking.
It is essential that such tragedies be analyzed through a gendered and structural lens so
that effective strategies for prevention can be developed. Neglecting the conditions
women face at home, especially during vulnerable periods of their lives, inflicts
irreparable human costs on society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
