On Monday, April 14, 2025, a woman from Meshgin Shahr, a city in Ardabil Province,
She was shot and killed by her husband using a firearm.
Another woman killed by her husband in Meshgin Shahr shocking, yet tragically
familiar. It is a repetition of the same cycle of violence, often concealed behind the vague
and overused phrase “serious family disputes.” While state-run media avoid disclosing
detailed information about the victim\u2019s identity, the perpetrator\u2019s motive, or the
background of the tragedy, a familiar pattern of femicide within the supposed safety of
the home reemerges.
The silence surrounding this crime is part of the problem. When a woman is killed in her
own home the very place that should be safest by a firearm, and the media merely
cite “family disputes,” the truth is obscured from society. That truth points to gendered
structures, the lack of legal and protective support for women, the easy and unregulated
access to firearms, and the long-standing psychological and physical abuse that may
have preceded the killing.
These killings are not merely family crises; they are the direct reflection of deeper
social, legal, and cultural breakdowns. Omitting critical details such as the woman\u2019s
name, age, or the perpetrator\u2019s exact motive is a deliberate act to erase the
accountability of state institutions in preventing violence.
As long as the media and lawmakers treat domestic violence as a private rather than a
societal issue, these tragedies will persist.
