On Thursday, May 1, 2025, a man named Mohammad Mohammadi in the Farhangian
neighborhood of Kermanshah shot and killed his wife, Batoul Mohammadi, his mother-
in-law, Fatemeh Mohammadi, and one of his sons, Saman Mohammadi (30 years old),
using a handgun. He also injured his daughter-in-law and his 18-year-old son. He then
ended his own life with the same weapon at his car dealership in the Erbabi
neighborhood. The exact motive for the killings is still unknown.
Such painful incidents represent a disturbing rise in the killing of women in Iran. When
domestic violence is combined with access to firearms, lack of oversight, unaddressed
threats, and neglect of individuals\u2019 mental health, tragedies like this occur. In recent
years, the rate of women being killed by family members has increased alarmingly. Yet,
the Islamic Republic not only lacks a plan to prevent this crisis but also actively fosters an
environment of violence through patriarchal laws, the elimination of gender education,
and the absence of effective support systems for women at risk.
The killing of women and family members in this case demands serious psychological,
social, and legal analysis. But as long as policymakers fail to recognize domestic
violence as a structural crisis, and the Iranian judicial and law enforcement systems
prioritize controlling women over protecting them, these killings will continue. This
tragedy must be another wake-up call for a society that is increasingly normalizing
domestic violence. Femicide, whether labeled as an \u201chonor killing\u201d or cloaked in other
justifications, is the killing of women because they are women. Combating it requires
deep reforms in law, culture, education, and social support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
