According to received reports, Yasaman Nosrati, a 20-year-old woman, was brutally
killed by her husband, Parsa (26 years old), on Saturday, May 17, 2025, in the Amiriyeh
recreational area of Shahrud. In his initial confession, the perpetrator cited “suspicion of
infidelity” as his motive. He stated that he took his wife to a remote area outside
Shahrud strangled her using a belt. After committing the killing, he fled the scene
but was later arrested by police forces.
State-affiliated media outlets such as the Rokna website reported the incident without
identifying the victim and used vague, clich\u00e9d phrases like \u201ca family dispute leading to
suffocation.\u201d This kind of language not only conceals the gender-based nature of the
violence but also plays a role in reproducing narratives that downplay the severity of the
crime namely, the killing of a woman by her husband.
Research indicates that the absence of effective legal protections for women facing
violence and the lack of widespread gender equality education are key contributing factors
factors to the recurrence of such atrocities.
The killing of Yasaman Nosrati once again exposes the deep-rooted structures of
gender-based violence and the relative impunity enjoyed by perpetrators of so-called
“honor” killings in Iran.
In a society governed by an authoritarian, patriarchal system, where women lack judicial
and social protection, the concept of “honor” has become a tool to justify the killing of
Women within private spaces. The narrative pushed by state media, such as
Rokna using vague terms like \u201cfamily dispute\u201d to obscure the brutal reality of femicide,
clearly demonstrates the normalization of domestic violence and the removal of its
gendered dimensions.
These killings are the product of systems that treat women as the property of men, and
the law by failing to criminalize domestic violence, by reducing sentences for so-called
\u201cdefense of honor,\u201d and by offering inadequate protection to women at risk, actively
contributes to the continuation of such violence.
The tragedy of Yasaman Nosrati\u2019s killing, like many before it, underscores the urgent
need for legal reform, public education on gender equality, and immediate support for
victims of violence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
