On Tuesday, September 2, 2025, Soraya Alimohammadi, a 32-year-old woman from
Saqqez, lost her life due to severe burns in one of the neighborhoods of the city. While
IranWire described the fire as \u201csuspicious,\u201d local sources reported that the blaze was
intentional and that Soraya\u2019s husband had set the house on fire.
According to local sources, Soraya was initially beaten by her husband and then brutally
set on fire, which caused her death.
IranWire reported that \u201cwitnesses said that emergency responders and firefighters
arrived after neighbors called them. The young woman, bound by hands and feet and
trapped in the flames, was taken from the house and transported to the hospital.
However, due to the severity of her burns and injuries, she passed away a few hours
later.\u201d
As in other cases of violence against women, the Saqqez police chief attributed the
killing to \u201cfamily disputes.\u201d The perpetrator reportedly had a history of industrial drug
use, and eyewitnesses stated that Soraya had returned to her family home the night
before. This raises the question: why were neither the law nor her family able to protect
her?
Crimes enabled by patriarchal family structures and laws are often covered up under
the label of \u201cfamily disputes,\u201d diverting attention from the realities of systemic male
dominance. Perpetrators of such murders often have prior records of violence, and
victims have repeatedly reported abuse to authorities and family members. Yet, instead
of receiving protection, they are often encouraged to endure abusive, humiliating
environments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
