On Tuesday, September 2, 2025, a 41-year-old man in Maragheh, a city in East
Azerbaijan province, killed his 38-year-old wife and their two daughters, aged 17 and 9,
in their shared home. After committing the crime, the perpetrator turned himself in to the
Maragheh Police Investigation Department.
State-affiliated media, including Rokna, without revealing the identities of the victims or
the perpetrator, described the motive for this crime as \u201cfamily problems\u201d, an ambiguous
and meaningless term that, instead of reflecting reality, serves to conceal structural
violence. Such language not only diminishes the social, legal, and political responsibility
for these crimes but also normalizes domestic violence and paves the way for its
continuation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cFamily Murder\u201d or Gender-Based Killing?
The term \u201cfamily murder\u201d is a linguistic construct used to obscure male violence. It
places victim and perpetrator on the same level, as if the entire \u201cfamily\u201d perished in
some mutual act, while the reality is clear: a man killed his wife and daughters.
\u201cFamily Problems\u201d; A Cover for Systematic Violence
Phrases like this, by erasing unequal gender and cultural structures, present killings as
the result of a \u201csimple dispute.\u201d In reality, the killing of women and children in Iran is
rooted in patriarchy, discriminatory laws, and easy access to tools of violence.
Despite official institutions having access to the identities of the victims and the
perpetrator, state media have refrained from publishing their names and details. This
policy of silence and ambiguity not only prevents social and legal accountability but also
marginalizes the violence faced by women and children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
