On October 31, 2025, Mitra Jamali, a 34-year-old woman from Darab, was killed by her
fianc\u00e9, who was also her cousin, after he shot her with a firearm. Just days before the
crime, the perpetrator had posted a photo of the same weapon on his Instagram page,
the weapon he later used to take Mitra\u2019s life.
According to local reports, the motive for the killing was Mitra\u2019s decision to end the
engagement. After the killing, several of the perpetrator\u2019s friends encouraged him on
social media, praising his actions and claiming that Mitra had \u201cbetrayed him\u201d and was
therefore \u201cdeserving of death.\u201d
These reactions reveal the deeply rooted culture of patriarchy and honor-based violence
in society, a culture in which, in some regions of Iran, a man\u2019s supposed \u201cownership\u201d
over a woman is taken for granted, and a woman\u2019s decision to separate or assert
independence is viewed as a threat to \u201cmale honor.\u201d
The killing of Mitra Jamali is another sign of the persistence of violent structures, the
weakness of legal protections for women, and the absence of public education on
equality and human rights.
The Stop honor Killings Campaign condemns this crime and calls for full legal
prosecution of the killer and serious action against the promotion of violence on social
media. Posting images of weapons and encouraging killing must be criminalized and
prosecuted by responsible authorities.
We honor Mitra\u2019s memory and affirm that no woman should be killed for making a
personal choice.
