In these killings, women are murdered by close family members or relatives due to their behavior, appearance, personal choices, or even mere rumors and baseless suspicions. Honor killings are the product of a dangerous combination of \u201cmale ownership over women\u2019s bodies,\u201d \u201cdomestic violence as a tool of control,\u201d and \u201clegal and governmental complicity through support or willful neglect.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This study examines <strong>65 cases of \u201chonor\u201d killings<\/strong> that occurred across different regions of Iran <strong>within only 75 days<\/strong>, from <strong>25 March to 10 June 2025<\/strong>. The concentration of this number of killings within such a short period clearly demonstrates that violence against women in Iran is not sporadic; it is a structural, deep-rooted, and widespread crisis. These cases provide a stark image of the persistence of violent cultural norms, the absence of effective protection mechanisms for women, and the inability or unwillingness of official institutions to prevent these crimes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What makes these statistics even more disturbing is the <strong>\u201csilent\u201d nature of many of these killings<\/strong>. A large proportion of honor killings are never reported; many are concealed under labels such as \u201csuicide,\u201d \u201cfalling from height,\u201d \u201cfamily dispute,\u201d or \u201caccident.\u201d Others are erased from public records under pressure from families or officials. Therefore, these <strong>65 cases represent only the visible tip of a massive iceberg<\/strong> an iceberg casting a heavy shadow over the lives of millions of women in Iran. This indicates that domestic violence, and the control of women\u2019s bodies and behavior within marriage, are deeply institutionalized. It also shows that <strong>femicide in Iran is strongly spouse-centered<\/strong>, unlike in many other societies where the primary perpetrators of honor killings are fathers or brothers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Iran, discriminatory laws such as <strong>Article 630<\/strong> and <strong>Article 301<\/strong> of the Islamic Penal Code directly or indirectly <strong>encourage such killings<\/strong> by reducing punishment or granting legal justification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Role of Fathers \/ Paternal Families<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fathers committed <strong>5 cases (8%)<\/strong>, forming the second-largest group of perpetrators. This aligns with patriarchal expectations around \u201cpreserving honor,\u201d particularly targeting:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>young women,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>unmarried women,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>divorced women.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Unknown Perpetrators (4 cases)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This category typically includes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>disguised intrafamilial murders,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>killings by distant relatives,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>cases where investigations remain incomplete.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Their presence reflects systemic concealment and family collusion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Other Perpetrators<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cases involving suitors, sons-in-law, cousins, in-laws, or temporary husbands (each 1\u20132 cases) indicate that <strong>honor violence extends beyond the nuclear family<\/strong> into the broader male kinship network. Around <strong>12%<\/strong> of victims were killed by male relatives other than husbands or fathers, showing the persistence of <strong>collective ownership of women<\/strong> within some tribal or traditional structures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Isolated Cases<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although representing less than 2%, these cases signal the range of motivations and severity of violence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Case of Bahman Farzaneh<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the murder of <strong>Elahe Hosseinnejad<\/strong> by <em>Bahman Farzaneh<\/em>, a Snapp driver who killed her for \u201cimproper hijab,\u201d a disturbing truth emerges: the state policy of <strong>\u201cCommanding Right and Forbidding Wrong\u201d<\/strong>, legalized and institutionalized by the Islamic Republic, has created a climate in which private citizens feel entitled to police, judge, and execute women based on personal interpretations of morality. Honor killings are nationwide<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They occur:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>in urban and rural areas,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>in developed and underdeveloped provinces,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>across cultural and ethnic groups.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>B. Three Clusters Emerge<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol type=\"1\" start=\"1\">\n<li><strong>Cultural\u2013Tribal Cluster:<\/strong> Kermanshah, Khuzestan, Kurdistan, West Azerbaijan\n<ul>\n<li>often firearm-based, sometimes collective killings.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Urban\u2013Migration Cluster:<\/strong> Tehran, Alborz, Qom\n<ul>\n<li>driven by generational conflict and women\u2019s autonomy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Traditional\u2013Family Cluster:<\/strong> Fars, Kerman, Semnan, Mazandaran\n<ul>\n<li>typically knives, strangulation, and domestic settings.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>C. The Role of Urbanization &amp; Migration<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tehran and Alborz together account for nearly <strong>20%<\/strong> of cases, showing:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>migration of traditional families to cities,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>tension between women\u2019s autonomy and patriarchal control.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>D. Areas with High Access to Firearms<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Khuzestan, Kermanshah, Khorasan, and West Azerbaijan show a pattern of:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>\u201c<strong>honor combined with guns<\/strong>\u201d \u2192 the most dangerous possible combination.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Conclusion<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This research reveals that between <strong>March 25 and June 10, 2025<\/strong>, at least <strong>65 honor killings<\/strong> were documented in Iran only a fraction of the true number. Analysis of methods, motives, and familial patterns shows that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>lack of public awareness,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>weak legal protection,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>discriminatory laws,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>and failure of state institutions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>are the primary drivers sustaining this crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The study underscores the urgent need for:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>legal reform<\/strong>,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>women\u2019s rights education<\/strong>,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>expansion of support shelters and psychological services<\/strong>,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>independent data collection<\/strong>, and public transparency.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Official statistics and state-controlled media consistently underreport or distort the true extent of these killings.
