February 22

In 1910, one hundred women from seventeen countries gathered at the World Conference on Women in Copenhagen. These women proposed March 8 as International Women’s Day in order to unite women around the world. Under the pressure and campaigns of women, finally, in 1977, the United Nations General Assembly recognized March 8 as International Women’s Day.

Every year, since then, the Iranian women’s movement has taken the opportunity to press for its demands. The revolution of 1979 took back many hard-earned women’s achievements of the previous decades. As a result, women took to the streets and stood up against the gender-based apartheid emerging shortly after the revolution, among which, was the ruling of the mandatory hijab. On 8 March 1979, thousands of women took to the streets in Tehran and marched and demonstrated against the mandatory hijab ruling and other rulings emerging from the new Islamic regime. Their slogan: “We didn’t make a revolution to go back in time”.

This year, the United Nations has decided to focus on “Innovation and Technology for Gender Equality” as a theme for International Women’s Day 2023.

This theme is the basis of the 67th assembly of the Commission on the Status of Women at the United Nations, entitled Innovation, Technological Change, and Education in the Digital Age to Achieve Gender Equality and Empowerment of All Women and Girls.

March 8 is the day of solidarity and sisterhood for all the women around the world to show their determination to eliminate sexual-gender oppression and reach equality with men.

The Campaign to Stop “honor” killings, emphasizes once again that women’s rights are human rights.

Now more than five months have passed since the movement of Women- Life-Freedom which was sparked by the murder of Mahsa (Gina) Amini in the morality police custody. This movement against her murder which was led by women and accompanied by men soon changed into a movement against the Islamic Republic and has since continued its way despite the huge number of arrests and murders of protestors. In trying to suppress the demonstrators, the security forces have systematically targeted young women and sometimes men to shoot into their upper bodies and faces, which has led to the blindness of a large number of them. Even this brutal and inhumane tactic has not stopped women from demonstrating their anger.

In its 3 years active presence, and in line with women’s demands for equality and freedom, the campaign to stop “honor” killings in Iran has been successful to raise awareness to the domestic violence against women and the murder of women by men in the family in order to protect their “honor”. The slogan woman is “nobody’s honor woman” and “nobody is anybody’s “honor” is now known among a wide range of people within Iranian society.

The campaign to Stop “honor” killings works together with women from around the world, especially women from the neighboring countries in order to build a world free of prejudice, gender stereotypes, and discrimination, and for a world that is diverse, fair, and inclusive, and in which differences are valued.

The campaign to stop “honor” killings in Iran celebrates the 8 March 2023 International Women’s Day and emphasizes once again that the freedom of a society is not possible without the freedom of its women.

Woman – Life – Freedom

ReplyForward

Woman – Life – Freedom

By Admin .
