With the killing of Mahsa Amini, another testament of the systematic oppression of women by the Islamic Republic was recorded. Mahsa (Zhina) Amini, a 22-year-old girl from Saqez, who was in a coma after being beaten by ” Gasht-e Ershad ” (Guidance Patrol) agents, died.

Not much time has passed since the arrest, torture, and forced confession of Sepideh Reshnou, and we still have not forgotten the wail of the anxious mother of her sick daughter in front of the Gasht-e Ershad (Guidance Patrol) car, that once again Iran shakes with the news of another government murder.

The people of Iran and the world have been witnessing systematic government violence against Iranian women in the name of preserving Islamic chastity for years. This is not the first time that a woman is killed by Gasht-e Ershad (Guidance Patrol). In October 2006, Dr. Zahra Bani Yaghoub was arrested in one of the Hamadan’s Park and was killed in detention center as a result of severe beatings. The murder of Mahsa Amini and Zahra Bani Yaghoub are the “state honor killing”. These murders are the continuation of the violent imposition of hijab on Iranian girls and women since their childhood.

The inhumane actions of the Gasht-e Ershad (Guidance Patrol) forces increased insecurities and irreparable mental, psychological, and physical damages to the bodies and souls of women in Iran. Under the pretext of implementing the principles of Islamic law, the Islamic Republic has maintained anti-women laws and has continuously spread violence against women. These murders are the result of laws such as compulsory hijab, avengers of blood, the law of polygamy, the right of custody, family law, and other similar laws.

The Stop honor Killings Campaign strongly condemns the murder of Mahsa Amini, which is another example of “government honor killing”. Gasht-e Ershad (Guidance Patrol) and suppression groups “Amar Be Maruf” (enjoin good) should be disbanded. Mahsa Amini’s killers should be tried and punished. More importantly, all anti-women laws of the Islamic Republic should be abolished. Feminicides in the Islamic Republic must be stopped.

We ask all men and women to protest against this crime side by side. The Stop honor Killings Campaign calls for the help of awakened consciences to be the voice for Mahsa Amini and her family.
