Young Woman Killed in Pishva: Erasure of the Victim’s Identity andSilence on the Motive in Official Reports
By:Rezvan Moghaddam
On Sunday, June 8, 2025, the body of a young woman was found in Pishva County,
Tehran Province. She had been killed, and her lifeless body was abandoned in a remote
area.
According to the head of Pishva’s law enforcement, the police identified and arrested a
suspect through intelligence and operational investigations. Colonel Seyed Akbar Arabi
stated that the suspect confessed to the killing during interrogation, and the case has
been handed over to the judiciary.
However, state-run media outlets such as ISNA and the police news website failed to
mention the victim’s name, age, any previous threats she may have faced, her
relationship to the perpetrator, or—most crucially—the motive for the killing. Instead,
these reports focused solely on “the police’s swift action.” This kind of security-oriented
reporting sidelines the victim, conceals the social and gendered context of the violence,
and reduces the event to a neutral crime stripped of systemic roots.
When the name of the victim is withheld, it’s as if she never existed. When the motive
behind the killing is omitted, the opportunity to recognize and combat recurring patterns
of violence is lost. The removal of histories, prior threats, or power dynamics is exactly
what enables the continuation of this deadly cycle. Media that publish such reports are
not informing the public—they are functioning as PR arms of the security apparatus.
We state firmly and clearly: no official report or media coverage should be published
without naming the victim, analyzing the motive, and holding responsible institutions
accountable.
Women and girls who are killed are not “disruptions to public safety”—they are victims
of a system that fails to guarantee even their most basic human rights.
