Violent killing of a woman in Tabriz: domestic violence continues to claim lives

In the ongoing wave of domestic violence-related killings in Iran, on Wednesday, May
21, 2025, a 45-year-old man in Tabriz brutally killed his wife with a knife and severely
injured their daughter. According to reports, both victims were taken to the hospital, but
the wife yielded to her injuries. The daughter’s condition has been described as critical.
The state-run Tasnim News Agency attempted to downplay the severity of the crime by
referring to it as a result of “family disputes,” a vague phrase that deliberately erases the
gendered and structural nature of the violence. The omission of the victim’s identity and
the focus on individual motives reflect a systematic denial of gender-based violence
within the media framework of the Islamic Republic.
This incident is part of a string of femicides in Iran that, in just one week, have claimed
the lives of at least six women. These cases serve as unambiguous reminders of the
urgent need for protective policies, the criminalization of domestic violence, and public
education on women’s rights and violence prevention.
