Zainab 19, Sahar 17, Geeti 13 and Rona Muhammad Omar, 52- killed in a mass honor killing-June 30, 2009

The Shafia family left Afghanistan in 1992.  Zainab, Sahar, and Geeti, were daughters of Mohammad Shafia, 58, and second wife Tooba Mohammad Yahya, 41.  Rona was Mohammad’s first wife — they lived in a polygamous relationship. Mohammad Shafia, his second wife Yahya and their son, Hamed Mohammad Shafia, 20, are each charged with four counts of first-degree murder. Yahya’s uncle, Latif Hyderi, testified that he tried to convince Zainab the eldest daughter to marry his son, but she refused. She said that she wanted to marry her boyfriend to get out of her father’s house. Despite Zainab’s objection, the marriage was forced, and this left the family in turmoil. The marriage was annulled after only one day. Hyderi told the jury that Shafia called him and said his daughter was “a very dirty whore” and had dishonored him.
