The freedom-seeking people of Iran, human rights organizations, and human rights institutions worldwide!
We condemn the attack on women prisoners in Evin prison.
The news received by the Stop Honor Killings campaign indicates that on Sunday,
August 6 th , 2024 equal to Mordad 16 th , 1403 Evin’s prison guards and security
guards made massive attacks on women political prisoners in the women’s ward
after their protests against the execution of Reza Rasaei, a Kurdish political
prisoner. In this violent attack, protesters were severely beaten and some of
them were so seriously injured that they were transferred to Evin prison hospital.
Unfortunately, due to the deliberate obstruction of phone communications until
the writing of this protest statement, no information about the state of these
injured women prisoners is available.
This is not the first time that the women’s wards in the prisons of the Islamic
Republic regime have been attacked. In the past, by various excuses, to create an
atmosphere of terror and make use of fear tactics, political prisoners’ wards have
been assaulted by prison guards. One of the reports says that on Sunday, May
12 th, 2024, the women’s ward of Evin prison was attacked by the security guards.
After raiding the Evin women’s ward, the guards carried out a physical
examination before the destruction of the women prisoners’ belongings.
Simultaneously, in Evin Prison’s meeting hall, the prisoners’ families were
searched in an abusive and heinous way. During the past few weeks, 37 female
prisoners were barred from having visitors because they had protested the
execution verdict of Pakhshan Azizi by a nightly sit-in in the Evin prison yard
We strongly condemn the violent suppression and mistreatment of female
prisoners in Evin prison who bravely protested the execution of Reza Rasaei.
These brave women who are already deprived of their freedom, now face more
injustice and cruelty for exercising their basic human rights to protest against
inhumane and unfair actions. The courage that these women in Evin prison have
demonstrated should not be met with punishment but with respect and support.
The execution of Reza Rasaei and the subsequent suppression of those who
expressed their opposition are a reminder of the continuous violations of human
rights in the IRI (Islamic Republic of Iran) judicial system. The actions taken
against these prisoners are a clear violation of international human rights
standards, including the right to freedom of expression and peaceful rallies.
The government of the Islamic Republic should immediately stop any violence and
repression against the prisoners who want to oppose the unjust actions. We
demand the immediate and unconditional release of all prisoners who have been
detained for exercising their right to protest and preserve their rights and dignity
while in detention.
Based on all the reports received, the Stop Honor Killings campaign while fully
supporting the “No to Executions Tuesdays” campaign in prisons all over Iran, and
honoring the protests of Iranian lionesses in Evin prison, is decisively demanding
the Islamic Republic government to end the suppression of women’s protests in
Evin prison.
