Killing of a 39-Year-Old Woman in Faruj: Another Tragedy Silenced Under the Label of “Family Murder”

On April 8, 2025, in Faruj County, located in North Khorasan Province, a 39-year-old
woman was killed by her 45-year-old husband using a cold weapon.
According to the Mehr News Agency, citing the commander of Faruj’s police
department, the suspect has been arrested. As is often the case, this killing has been
labeled a “family murder,” and no further details have been released.
The news of a 39-year-old woman being killed by her husband in Faruj once again
draws public attention to one of the most deep-rooted and systemic forms of violence
against women in Iran. The fact that this crime—like many similar cases—has been
categorized as a “family murder” and reported without further information reflects a
troubling pattern of concealing or downplaying gender-based violence.
The use of the term “family murder” has essentially become a linguistic tool to obscure
the misogynistic and structural nature of these crimes. In a society where protective
laws for women are inadequate and judicial, police, and media institutions often
approach such tragedies with leniency and neglect, such terminology contributes to
legitimizing a culture of violence.
