Killing of a 49-year-old woman in Damghan by a man during a verbal dispute: another instance of gender-based violence masked as “Personal Issues”

By: Rezvan Moghaddam

On Saturday, May 3, 2025, a 49-year-old woman in the Kalateh town, a district of
Damghan in Semnan Province, was killed in a violent attack.
According to ISNA News Agency, the woman was washing a carpet in an alley when
she was deliberately run over by a 27-year-old man following a verbal altercation.
Despite being taken to a hospital, she surrendered to her injuries due to the severity of
the trauma.
The assailant fled the scene after the attack but was eventually arrested and, according
to official sources, confessed to intentional killing. Nevertheless, state-controlled media
refrained from revealing any clear motive and only cited the vague phrase “personal
problems” — a recurring narrative in many cases of violence against women in Iran that
attempts to downplay the severity of the crime as a typical dispute.
While the official reports do not mention any potential relationship between the killer and
the victim, the nature of the killing, using a deadly vehicle following a street argument,
raises the question: are we once again witnessing a case of gender-based violence
being concealed under labels like “personal conflict” or “street dispute”?
This killing is one of many deadly acts of violence against women in Iran that each year
are kept away from justice and public awareness by withholding transparency and
concealing the gendered motives behind them. The media’s silence and ambiguity in
portraying the true motives not only hinder accurate sociological analysis but also pave
the way for the repetition of such violence.
