A Woman Set on Fire by Her Husband in Shiraz
On August 12, 2024, a woman was set on fire by her husband in Shiraz. The motive behind the crime, as reported by government-affiliated media, was labeled as “family disputes,” similar to other cases of femicide.
According to the report by the Young Journalists Club, a government-linked news outlet, “Initial investigations by police revealed that a 48-year-old man, following family disputes, acquired gasoline and went to his father-in-law’s house, where he set his wife and father-in-law on fire.”
In this horrific crime, two of the victim’s sisters also suffered minor injuries. The perpetrator was eventually identified and arrested at his hiding place in one of Shiraz’s neighborhoods. No further information about this murder is available.
The act of men setting women on fire as a form of revenge is one of the most severe and horrifying forms of domestic and gender-based violence. Such acts often occur in societies where violence against women is deeply rooted, and men resort to such brutal behaviors to exert control or punish women.
The motives behind these crimes can include disobedience, divorce, rejection by the woman, or even preserving “honor” and “reputation.”
This type of violence not only inflicts irreparable physical and psychological harm on the victim but also reflects patriarchal cultures where women are seen as property or subordinates of men. Setting women on fire as an act of revenge symbolizes domination and the desire for power, aiming to silence and intimidate women. Combating such crimes requires profound cultural changes, widespread awareness, and strict laws to protect women and punish perpetrators.
