Statement of the “Stop Honor Killings” Campaign on the Occasion of International Women’s Day – March 8, 2025
International Women’s Day stands as a symbol of the relentless struggle for equal rights, justice, and the human dignity of women. In 1910, one hundred women from seventeen countries gathered at the International Women’s Conference in Copenhagen and proposed March 8 as a global day of unity and solidarity for women in their pursuit of fundamental human rights. Through the persistent efforts of women’s rights activists, the United Nations General Assembly officially recognized March 8 as International Women’s Day in 1977.
From the early 20th century to the present day, women worldwide have made immense sacrifices and countless efforts to break the barriers of discrimination, achieving remarkable progress in political, economic, cultural, and social spheres. This day serves as an opportunity to honor the rich history of women’s struggles and to remind the world that every victory has been the result of collective resistance against oppressive systems.
This year, Iranian women celebrate International Women’s Day with joy and pride, having compelled the misogynistic Islamic regime to retreat on the issue of compulsory hijab through their extraordinary efforts, sacrifices, and national solidarity.
However, alongside these achievements, deep wounds remain—such as honor-based violence and other forms of violations of women’s rights. Killings carried out in the name of preserving so-called “family honor” reflect the most entrenched aspects of patriarchal mindsets and unjust cultural structures. The Stop Honor Killings Campaign firmly believes that every woman has the right to live freely, safely, and with dignity. Women have the power to determine their own paths in life, free from coercion and violence.
Today, we draw inspiration from the historic achievements of women and, with a spirit of solidarity, demand a serious commitment from governments, judicial systems, and social institutions to protect women’s rights and ensure a safe environment for them. Only through unity, changing societal attitudes, and strengthening legal protections can we take effective steps toward ending honor killings and building a more just future for all women.
At the Stop Honor Killings Campaign, we stand alongside women around the world in the fight for a world free of prejudice, gender stereotypes, and discrimination—a world that is diverse, just, and inclusive, where differences are valued. Honoring the history of women’s struggles and victories, we remain on the frontlines of this battle because we firmly believe that freedom, justice, and human dignity can only be realized when every woman can shape her own life without fear of blame or violence.
We call on all conscious and responsible individuals to break their silence in the face of misogyny. On this March 8, International Women’s Day, the Stop Honor Killings Campaign once again reaffirms that women’s rights are human rights.
