On April 18, 2025, a woman in the city of Tabriz was shot and killed by her husband with
a firearm. The incident occurred on 17 Shahrivar Street, directly outside a family
counseling center.
According to official reports, a 53-year-old man had visited the center with his wife in an
attempt to resolve family issues. However, after the counseling session ended, an
argument broke out, and the man pulled a gun he had hidden in his bag and fatally shot
his wife.
Several critical points stand out in this deadly act of violence:
 The location of the killing outside a counseling center, a space meant to offer
Safety and resolution highlight the deep crisis of domestic violence in Iran and
The alarming ineffectiveness of some support structures.
 The premeditated nature of the killing, bringing a firearm to a counseling session, shows this was not a spontaneous reaction, but a calculated act of
violence.
 The removal of the victim’s identity and the repeated use of vague phrases
like “family disputes” in official reports contribute to the normalization of violence
against women and dull the public’s sensitivity to these recurring tragedies.
This incident once again underscores the urgent need to review protective laws for
women and to strengthen systems that are meant to prevent domestic violence. The
killing of this woman in Tabriz is yet another reminder that addressing domestic violence
requires serious attention to women’s rights and robust institutional support.
Society, lawmakers, and responsible institutions must take more decisive
and effective action against this ongoing pattern of gender-based violence.
