“honor Killing” of Fatemeh, Abadani girl, by order of her father and carried out by her uncle
On Sunday, September 7, 2025, a 16-year-old girl named Fatemeh R. became the
victim of yet another “honor killing” in Shadegan. Instead of protecting and supporting
his daughter, her father issued the “order of death,” and his brother (Fatemeh’s uncle)
carried it out by cutting her jugular vein.
Despite the clarity of this tragedy, official media once again attempted to minimize and
conceal the crime under labels such as “family disputes” or “domestic homicide.” This
language, repeated thousands of times, refuses to name these crimes by their real
name honor killings and in doing so, removes social, cultural, and legal responsibility
from the patriarchal system.
The truth is that Fatemeh’s killing was neither a personal incident nor a family dispute. It
is the direct product of laws that grant fathers ownership over the life and body of their
daughters; of media narratives that pour salt on the wounds of victims through
deceptive storytelling; and of a ruling system whose silence and inaction create the
ground for these crimes to be perpetuated.
The Stop honor Killings Campaign once again warns: as long as discriminatory laws
remain unreformed, media continue to whitewash crimes instead of telling the truth, and
patriarchy remains woven into the fabric of society, girls like Fatemeh will be sacrificed
every day.
