Killing of a Daughter Over Relationship with a Man in Kuzehrash Village, Salmas
On Saturday, July 27, 2024, in the village of Kuzehrash, Salmas County, West
Azerbaijan Province, a man strangled his daughter to death due to her acquaintance
with a young man from the village. The victim, named Jane Pirnejad, was 25 years old
and the mother of two children, aged four and six. According to Harana, a source close
to the family confirmed that this femicide was incited by a relative after private images of
Jane were circulated.
Jane Pirnejad, a 25-year-old woman, fell victim to patriarchy and an “honor killing.”
According to Harana, a reliable source close to the family of the victim, while confirming
this incident, reported: “Jane” had recently become acquainted with a young man from
the village. One of her relatives took photos and videos of their secret relationship and
then shared them with the village residents. Upon learning of this, Jane’s father killed
her by drowning her head in a basin of water.
“honor killings” refer to acts of violence, often killing, committed by male relatives
against female family members. Iranian laws contain provisions that exempt individuals
who commit “honor killings” from severe punishment.
The rising statistics of “honor killings” are alarming and have turned into a social crisis,
requiring immediate attention and revisions to civil and criminal laws. According to the
Stop honor Killings Campaign, 187 documented and reported honor killings occurred in
- These figures do not include murders related to theft or financial issues. It should
also be noted that many reports of “honor killings” may only appear in local publications
or go unreported.
Government-affiliated media often refer to “honor killings” as “family murders” to avoid
criticizing discriminatory laws against women and the gender-based educational
system, which are among the causes of honor killings.
