Elderly Woman Brutally Killed by Her Son in Naqadeh; Domestic
Violence Continues to Claim Lives
On Thursday, March 6, 2025, a 75-year-old woman in Naqadeh, a southern city in Iran’s
West Azerbaijan Province, was killed by her son. The motive behind the crime was
officially described as a “family dispute.” According to reports, the woman was fatally
struck in the head with a blunt object by her son. ISNA reported that the local police
commander confirmed the motive as “family disputes.”
One of the pressing issues in such cases is the language and framing used by the
media and authorities. Phrases like “family dispute” tend to normalize and excuse
severe violence and domestic killings. This kind of language portrays perpetrators as
people experiencing temporary distress, while ignoring the deeper roots of these
tragedies—such as a culture of violence, inadequate protective laws, and the lack of
accessible social services for managing family crises.
In this case, the victim was an elderly woman—possibly in a vulnerable position due to
economic or social dependency. Violence against elderly women, which may include
physical, psychological, financial abuse, or even murder, is often underreported and
unrecognized in many societies. Factors such as financial dependence, illness, social
isolation, and lack of adequate support systems make elderly individuals particularly
susceptible to abuse.
