England – South London: Banaz Mahmod, 20-killed by her family,January 2006
Banaz Mahmod, a Kurdish woman was murdered on the orders of her family in a so-called honor killing because she ended a violent and abusive forced marriage. She then started a relationship with someone of her own choosing, Rahmat Sulemani. Banaz’s uncle, Ari Agha Mahmod, and father, Mahmod Babakir Mahmod disapproved of her actions. At a family meeting, the men of the family agreed that both should be killed for bringing shame on the family and the community.
