Killing of a Young Woman by Her Husband

Leila Shakiba, a young woman from Sanandaj, was stabbed to death by her husband, Bahram Bakhtiari, who is from Hamedan.

According to a report received by the Stop honor Killings Campaign from Sanandaj: a young woman from Sanandaj, identified as 39-year-old Leila Shakiba, was stabbed to death by her husband. Leila Shakiba is a mother of two children and has lived in Hamedan. Leila’s husband stabbed her to death in her home due to family disputes. The killing occurred on Friday, October 15th, 2021.

Another honor killing under the pretext of family disputes, under the umbrella of the anti-woman laws of an anti-woman government.

According to Rezvan Moghadam (spokeswoman for the Stop honor Killings Campaign): “The government authorizes violence under discriminatory laws against women. The media misrepresents the killing of women. Violence has not been criminalized and the lack of a safe houses and shelters for women and the lack of judicial investigation into violence has narrowed the field against women and increased the number of violence day by day, so that we see the collaboration of the political, legal and patriarchal system against women.”

According to Rezvan Moghadam, looking at the Iranian set of laws on women, we find that in the Iranian legal system, women are not recognized as an independent human being because of their “gender”. This paves the way for violence, which systematically provide legal permits for violence in all its forms, especially the most severe one that is killing women.

The legal structure is aided by the patriarchal system and primitive traditions, the discourse of “honor” enters the structure of society from the definition of women and the view of women and their rights. Looking at Article 301 and the high rate of killing of girls by fathers and paternal families, we find that the killing of a girl has a broadly different meaning and root, “threat to reputation.”

Also, Articles 612 and 630 of the Islamic Penal Code, observe and find meaning in relation to women. Because in this regard, the law disclaims responsibility and leaves the legal authority to the personal decision and judgment of the person (killer). “And this is exactly where violence against women is licensed through legal channels and implemented through patriarchal thinking and primitive traditions.”
