Kevistan, a 35-Year-Old Woman, was Killed by her Husband in Iraqi Kurdistan

According to a report received by the Stop honor Killings Campaign, today, Thursday, April 21, 2022, the body of a beheaded woman was transferred to the emergency room of Erbil city in Kurdistan. According to Dr. Karun Nankeli, head of the East Arbil Emergency Room, the woman was killed by her husband. The identity of the victim of this “honor killing” is Kevistan, 35 years old and the mother of 4 children. This killing is similar to the killing of Mona Ghazal Heydari who was beheaded by her husband in Ahvaz about two months ago and he paraded the streets with her head to prove his “muscularity”.

In Iraqi Kurdistan, patriarchy and the sense of ownership over women are creating disaster every day. One of the most horrific pieces of evidence of brutal violence against women in Iraqi Kurdistan is the Anonymous/Unknown Cemetery with three thousand Nameless graves of women and children who the men of the family have identified them as the cause for family and tribe disgrace.

Men who worship ‘honor’, recklessly kill women in the family and have no fear of punishment. Men who are willing to die to preserve their “mother tongue”, but if the same mother does not want to behave according to the ancient laws and customs, these men will sentence her to death.
