Brother Kills Three Sisters with a Firearm

On Friday, January 17, 2025, in Ibrahim Abad, a neighborhood on the outskirts of
Boroujerd in Lorestan Province, a brother killed his three sisters using a handgun and
then fled the scene. However, he was arrested an hour later.
The Islamic Republic newspaper reported: “Based on initial evidence and documents,
the motive for the murder has been linked to family issues.” State-affiliated news
agencies and those close to the government often simplify such matters by attributing
the motive for these murders to “family issues,” but they never explain why women are
the victims and men in the family are the perpetrators, nor what role the government
plays in these incidents.
This tragic event in Boroujerd is another example of domestic violence that, especially
when directed at women, has deadly consequences. The term “family issues” used by
news sources as the motive for the murders is merely a vague justification that fails to
address the root causes of family violence and murders. In this case, the brother killed
his three sisters, reflecting the deep-seated patriarchal and domineering attitudes within
family structures.
In many similar cases, perpetrators of such killings in patriarchal societies use
traditional male roles to exercise control and power over women. These acts of violence
are not just rooted in family disputes but stem from incorrect social attitudes and
domination. Media reports referring to “family issues” without detailing the events serve
to obscure and oversimplify the underlying causes of domestic violence. This approach
naturally coverings the role and responsibility of the government and authorities in
preventing gender-based violence.
This analysis highlights the importance of addressing social and cultural issues when
investigating the major causes of domestic murders. The role and responsibility of the
government and related institutions in reducing violence against women should also be
critically examined to find comprehensive and preventative solutions to such tragedies.
