On Wednesday, April 30, 2025, a 50-year-old man in Khorramshahr, Khuzestan province,
brutally killed his 45-year-old wife and 24-year-old son with multiple knife stabs.
According to local media, including Rokna, the man first stabbed his wife to death and then
used the same weapon to fatally attack his son. During the assault, three neighbors who tried
to intervene and de-escalate the situation were also attacked and severely injured. Their
conditions are reported as critical and they have been hospitalized.
This bloody incident once again reveals the depth of the domestic violence crisis in
Iran—violence that often escalates into tragedy due to the absence of effective legal
protections and support systems. The simultaneous killing of a wife and child reflects the
buildup of rage and controlling behavior often rooted in patriarchal family dynamics.
In such environments, women and children are routinely subjected to continuous violence and
strict control, with no access to preventive institutions or safe shelters to help them escape the
cycle of abuse. The fact that neighbors were harmed while trying to help underscores that
domestic violence in Iran is not merely a private issue—it is a public and social crisis that
threatens the safety of others as well.
The lack of public education on peaceful conflict resolution, the failure to criminalize domestic
violence effectively, and the weakness of judicial and support institutions all contribute to such
tragedies. Until strong protective laws for women and family members are passed and
enforced, this cycle of violence will continue.
