Media silence on gender-based violence in Baluchistan: the urgent need for civic response

By:Rezvan Moghaddam

On Tuesday, July 1, 2025, a young girl in the village of Yekdar, Jask County
(Hormozgan Province), was strangled and killed by her brother for opposing a forced
marriage. Despite the horrific nature of the crime, neither the victim’s identity has been
released nor has the official media covered the incident. Only local sources such as
“Rasad Baluchistan” have reported the case. The only detail shared is the alleged
killer’s name: “Yousef B.” The question remains: Why has the local media withheld his
full name, even though he is currently a fugitive?
This silence is deeply alarming. Past cases show that honor killings in regions like
Sistan and Baluchistan are often concealed under the veil of media indifference and
official silence. Victims remain nameless and voiceless, while perpetrators frequently
enjoy impunity.
Civil society activists, independent journalists, and human rights organizations must
urgently respond to this clear injustice. The absence of monitoring and documentation
not only enables these atrocities to recur, but also kills the victims twice: once with
violence, and once with erasure.
Let us be the voices of these silenced girls
The Stop honor Killings Campaign Calls for:
 Immediate, transparent, and public investigation of this case by police and
judiciary
 Disclosure of the victim’s identity to raise public awareness
 A clear legal statute criminalizing severe gender-based violence
 Creation of a national database of anonymous victims of violence
 Urgent passage of comprehensive legislation protecting women from violence
 Training for judges, law enforcement, and media on the nature of gender-based
violence
 Establishment of safe houses for women at risk
 Creation of a warning system and security provisions for threatened women
 Strengthening of support networks and free legal access for women seeking
divorce
