Stepmother Was Killed by Stepson with Handgun in Yasouj
On August 16, 2024, the Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad Police News Agency reported a killing involving a firearm in a neighborhood of Yasouj. Initial investigations revealed that a man shot and killed his stepmother before fleeing the scene.
According to the police report, the killer was identified and arrested within a few hours. The handgun used in the crime was also discovered and seized from the suspect’s hideout.
During initial interrogations, the suspect cited “family disputes” as his motive for committing the murder.
The police and media outlets close to the government often use vague terms like “family disputes” or “domestic murders” for reasons discussed below.
The use of the term “domestic murder” by law enforcement and pro-government media instead of “honor killing” is driven by political, cultural, and social factors. One of the main reasons may be an attempt to downplay public sensitivity and attention to the issue of honor killings. The term “honor killing” directly refers to motives linked to honor, reputation, and gender issues, which typically stem from traditional and patriarchal beliefs.
By using the phrase “domestic murder,” the issue is presented in a more general and less controversial manner, which may reduce focus on the specific gender and cultural aspects of these types of killings. Additionally, this shift in terminology might be an effort to manage negative international and domestic perceptions and prevent the issue from being framed as a human rights violation or a breach of women’s rights.
