27-Year-Old Fasai Resident Kills His 43-Year-Old Mother with a Gun

Stop honor Killings Campaign reports: On August 9, 2024, a 43-year-old woman named
Somayeh (Hamideh) Abdoli was killed by her 27-year-old son, Ebrahim Abdoli, with a
firearm in one of the districts of Fasa, a town in Fars Province. As usual, government-
affiliated media have reported the motive for the crime as “family disputes.”
Colonel Mohammad Rezaei stated that following a report to the 110 Police Emergency
Center about a deadly argument in one of the districts of Fasa, police detectives were
dispatched to the scene. Initial investigations revealed that the 27-year-old had killed his
mother due to a disagreement and then committed suicide.
Officials, when addressing the killing of women, often advise: “It is better to seek help
from elders to resolve disputes when you have differences!” These recommendations
come in the context of more than one woman being killed daily in Iran by various
means, yet officials do not question why there is such a high level of violence against
women or why violence against women has become normalized.
Considering the age difference between this mother and her son, the woman was only
16 years older than her son. She was both a victim of child marriage and child
motherhood, and at the age of 43, she was killed by her son. Hamideh was a mother of
three children and had also been forced into marriage at the age of 13. This series of
events shows that this woman was victimized multiple times. Moreover, laws, traditions,
anti-women customs, and improper education have played a fundamental role in
fostering violence against women in society.
